Plot
SPOILER AHEAD! Important details about the plot or story are up ahead |
At Elmore Junior High, Darwin and Gumball find something's different about Banana Joe, but can't seem to figure out what it is. In reality, Joe's got a brand new pair of pants, and despite blatantly showing off his new look and giving verbal clues, the brothers are still oblivious to his new attire. After he flat out tells them he's wearing pants, Gumball is put into a state of shock, which lasts throughout most of the day.
At recess, Darwin questions why Gumball is so preoccupied with Joe's pants. Gumball says that Joe's peel is already considered his clothes and that he's doubling up. The brothers encounter Joe at the library, where Gumball explains his problem. Joe attempts to wear the pants differently to appease him, but none of them appear to work. Despite Gumball's frustrations, Joe still refuses to take his pants off.
At lunch, Gumball can hardly eat without gagging at Joe's pants. He explains the the school has a delicate ecosystem that could be disrupted with Joe's new fashion statement and that it raises weird questions for everyone. Joe counters that Elmore doesn't have a strict dress code, pointing out how Carrie and Penny are naked, Julius and Mowdown only have half of an outfit on, and Gumball should realistically be wearing only a collar since he's a cat. As he leaves and claims Gumball is out of touch, Darwin starts feeling self-conscious only wearing shoes at school.
The next day, Darwin begins wearing two sets of pants, one for his legs and one for his tailfin. Gumball points out that Joe's actions have disputed the social fabric of their surroundings, and shows that Darwin's not the only one panicking about his appearance. Sarah and Hot Dog Guy have a hard time walking around after covering themselves up, Teri is seen drawing marker all over her body, Carmen struggles to find a pair of pants that can fit her, Penny desperately tries to reassemble her shell, Tina stumbles walking in high heels, and Carrie is embarrassed after her sheet falls off. Ocho goes berserk after Gumball and Darwin fail to decide a proper way pants can fit on his body. Gumball and Darwin assemble the rest of the students outside to figure out a solution. As Joe makes them feel increasingly uncomfortable by stretching, Gumball comes up with an idea on how to communicate that to him.
Later, after Joe leaves the bathroom, the rest of his classmates are not to be wearing anything at all, with even Hot Dog Guy ditching his bun and Sarah no longer in her cone. Just like Gumball and Darwin earlier, Joe is oblivious to their appearances and behavior. In the classroom, a naked Gumball tries to get him to figure out what's going on, but when he continues to be oblivious, Gumball summons his parents. Banana Bob and Barbara appear to bring Joe his packed lunch, but neither of them are wearing their peels. Upon comprehending this, Joe breaks down and realizes how weird it is, finally getting Gumball's point across. Believing he's overdressed, he rips off his own peel in a panic. On the bus ride home, Gumball, still naked, shivers from how cold it is. Joe offers him his discarded peel to make him warmer.

Trivia
A still from a deleted scene.
- This is the thirty-first episode not written by Ben Bocquelet.
- The first thirty episodes were "The Vacation," "The Law," "The Potato," "The Line," "The Anybody," "The Founder," "The Intelligence," "The Understanding," "The Stink," "The Awareness," "The Slip," "The Possession," "The Wish," "The Agent," "The Decisions," "The Assistant," "The Thing," "The Astrological," "The Boring," "The App," "The Gut," "The Gourmet," "The Portrait," "The Climb, "The Summoning," "The Trumpet," "The Diary," "The Fools," "The Sonder," and "The Mister."
- This episode is one of two that shares its name with a comic/novel release, the other being "The Storm."
- This episode was first mentioned in the press release for the first half of Season 7, despite not being released as part of it.
- At 9 minutes and 50 seconds long, this is the shortest episode in the series.
- At least one deleted scene is known. According to animator Camille Hubert, Gumball is looking for Banana Joe in the boys' bathroom and checks under the stalls to see where he is. He spots some lowered pants in one of the stalls and grabs them, thinking they belong to Banana Joe. They rip and it's revealed they belong to Mr. Corneille. He opens the door, angry that Gumball ripped his pants but said it was smart of him to wear green tights (the tights are so tight he looks naked). He walks out of the bathroom with dignity, despite the terrified screams coming from outside. The door next to this stall opens, revealing Banana Joe.[1]
- When inquired by a fan, crew member Caroline Laville stated the episode was "definitely cut down," though she didn't know why. However, the episode was fully finished and the cuts were made by project leads once the season wrapped up production.[2]
- Hubert believes the scene was cut as it could potentially encourage kids to do the same thing as Mr. Corneille.
- When Gumball and Darwin are seated on a bench at the schoolyard, a street sign in the background reads "Studio Soi Blvd." This sign reappears later in the episode when the kids gather to discuss how to deal with Joe.
Continuity
- This is Banana Joe's sixth major role. The other five were "The Banana," "The Promise," "The Mothers," "The Ex," and "The Future."
- When Gumball's brain explodes, he makes a similar face to one he made in "The Uncle."
- This is the second time Ocho shoots lasers out of his butt. The first was "The Score."
Cultural references
- Banana Joe says Mowdown is "Porky-Pigging" it by wearing just a t-shirt. He is referencing the Looney Tunes character of the same name who is famous for wearing nothing but a blue jacket and bowtie.
- Additionally, this is the second instance of a character from a different franchise being namedropped. The first instance was in "The Drama," when Darwin mentions Yoshi from the Super Mario franchise.
- Ocho's confusion over how to wear pants is a reference to a meme illustrating how a dog would wear pants. One image displays the dog wearing pants on all four legs while another displays it only wearing pants on its rear end.
Goofs/errors
- When Banana Joe gets up from his seat, Alan can be seen seated in the background talking to Masami. A couple of seconds later, he has seemingly teleported all the way to another side of the cafeteria with Bobert when Banana Joe conscious Carrie to not be naked. When Joe walks back over to Gumball and Darwin, Alan is back at the table with Masami. When Joe leaves the cafeteria, Alan is floating by the entrance watching him leave.
- In the schoolyard where Gumball and his classmates are planning on how to deal with Banana Joe wearing pants, Penny's wings are missing.
- When the School bus pulls up to Elmore Junior High during an establishing shot, Rocky is not seen driving it.
- When Gumball moves behind Joe's desk, his nudity isn't pixelated in the few frames in which his full torso is visible

School Hallway
- [Episode starts with Darwin is looking confused, while Banana Joe is walking by in circles]
- Darwin: Is something different about Joe, but I can't put my finger on it... dude, let me borrow your finger.
- [Darwin grabs Gumball's hand and puts his finger on his chin]
- Banana Joe: [Attention grunting noises]
- Gumball: Hmmm, yeah, I get what you're saying
- Darwin: Yeah, a new haircut maybe?
- Gumball: Hmmm, still looks very much uncut
- Banana Joe: Heh? [Joe checks his head and is irritated before pulling his pants up and continuing what he was doing]
- Darwin: H-hey Joe, have you- have you like, rippen?
- Banana Joe: No? We're late bloomers, in my family.
- Gumball: There's something different about you tho. Is it a weird banana thing? Like are you making scenes, or growing a twin from your head?
- Banana Joe: What the? No!
- Darwin: You got a girlfriend?
- Banana Joe: No! We bananas are late [hinting at his pants] bloooomeeerss
- Gumball: Ha! You understood you were nothing before being born, knocked and sent to a cosmic crisis about that left you changed forever?
- Banana Joe: No. I'm already one with my ancestors. We share a connection, passed on thru our [Intending to do a Jean pun] genes.
- Gumball: Eh, I don't know then.
- Banana Joe: Agh! Pants! I'm wearing beautiful, white legged, spun cotton, stone washed, perfectly cut, classicly tough stitched, massive enhancing, pants! [Possing]
- Darwin: Oh yeah.
- Gumball: [Gumball is left ammused for what he saw. Then his head explodes.]
- Banana Joe: Is he alright?
- Darwin: Gumball struggles with change, but don't worry, you look great.
- Banana Joe: Thanks! [Joe walks away, happy for Darwin's opinion]
- [Gumball's head keeps on exploding to the point of activating the ceiling extinguishers]
School Backyard
- [Gumball is still on a state of shock]
- Darwin: Wow, this pants thing really got into your head didn't it?
- [Darwin opens Gumball's head to see a miniature Joe dancing]
- Miniature Banana Joe: Pants, banana, pants, pants, banana, pants, banana, pants, pants, bananaa!
- [Gumball's head keeps on exploding at a alarming rate, then he closes it]
- Darwin: Dude you're being a little bit a boomer. Why are you so preoccupied with what Banana Joe wears?
- Gumball: It's a banana! His skin is clothes! Him wearing pants is a "hat-on-a-hat" situation. Mittens over gloves, socks on tights, he's doubling up!
- Darwin: Maybe you just go talk to him if it is bothering you up.
In the library
- Banana Joe: Gumball, thanks for the feedback. I hear what you wanna, stitch together. Hehehe, hehehe. But I'm a pants guy now, that's the truth.
- Darwin: Maybe you can style them differently?
- Banana Joe: Okay, okay, okay. What if i do this? [Banana Joe rolls up his pants]
- Gumball: Is not a question of length, Is that- Is that you're wearing pants at all.
- Banana Joe: Okay, what if i do this? [Banana Joe pulls up his pants to mouth level] Huh?
- Gumball: Eeehh no.
- Banana Joe: Okay, what if I do this? [Banana Joe pulls his pants up to the point where his face is visible only through the zipper.] Oh!
- Gumball: I can still see your stock.
- Banana Joe: [Sighs] But what if I do, this! [Banana Joe puts his pants on his head]
- Gumball: [Unamused] It just feels wrong, man.
- Banana Joe: [Puts pants back to their original possition, now rendered in 3D with buttocks clearly visible] What about this?
- Gumball: [Gumball loses it and screams] YOU'RE JUST MAKING IT WORSE!!
- Banana Joe: [Screaming also] WELL IM NOT TAKING MY PANTS OFF!!
- [Everyone else in the library is shhh-ing them]
- Bobert: Quiet
- Teri: This is the library!
- Banana Joe: Exactly Gumball! Shush! Accept it, I'm a pants guy now. [Joe walks away]
- Darwin: Hate to seeing him go, but I love to watch him leave.
Cafeteria
- [Gumball and Darwin are normally eating, until Banana Joe shows up to sit with them, which Gumball gags]
- Darwin: What's up with you dude? Is not like you yuck at someone else yum?
- Gumball: [Slams table, with a serious, over detailed face] Elmore High is a delicate eco-system, with precariously balanced extremely fragile egos. Banana Joe is making it a fashion statement, that could have a serious, button-fly effect.
- Darwin: Uh?
- Gumball: You know like-like, butterfly effect? Eh, I don't know, just trying something out. But you can't start wearing pants out of nowhere!
- Darwin: Is it really that bad?
- Gumball: It just raises weird questions for everyone!
- Banana Joe: How? Is not like there's a dress code in Elmore. How do you decide what's appropriate and what not?
- [Walks up to Carrie while she's carrying a tray of food]
- Banana Joe: Take Carrie, did she die wearing a hairclip?
- Carrie: Hey, I was born a ghost.
- Banana Joe: Oh okay. So you spent your whole afterlife not putting clothes at? Is that appropriate?
- [Carrie phases thru the wall in embarrasment]
- Banana Joe: What about Penny? She used to wear a shell! [points at her] and then, nothing.
- [Penny blushes, then her wings enlarge and she covers herself with them.]
- Banana Joe: [Approaching Julius and Mowdown. Pointing at Julius] What about this Bachelorette party outfit? Or this guy? [Pointing at Mowdown] Straight up Porky Pig-ing it in just a T-shirt? [Both Julius and Mowdown hug in embarrasment]
- Banana Joe: [Approaching Sussie] She's the only one dressed normally! Is this supposed to be the norm? [Sussie smiles]
- Banana Joe: [Returning to the table, now approaching Gumball] Same with you, Gumball. As a cat, the only thing you should be wearing is this! [Banana Joe shows Gumball a picture of a live action cat in pirate attire] Once a year for Halloween. The rest of the time you put with this! [Joe shows Gumball another picture, now a cat collar]
- Gumball: [Gasps]
- [Banana Joe goes to leave the cafeteria, now berating everyone else in the moment]
- Banana Joe: I'm not gonna waste my time explaining it to you. Your behaviour is embarrasing. Hmm!
- Darwin: [Flustered] I kinda feel like I'm in one of those nightmares where you naked at school right now. [Covers himself with the tray of food, which makes the food fall off from it.]
Next day
- [Gumball and Darwin are walking down the school hallway, with Darwin wearing now pants, one in his legs and one in his fin]
- Gumball: Joe opened a can of worms, man. It's unpicking the whole social fabric, one stitch at a time. Look at what is done to you, look at what is done to them.
- [Cut to Sarah and Hot Dog Guy all covered up. Hot Dog Guy bumps into Sarah, who is wearing Ice cream wrapping.]
- Hot Dog Guy: Sorry!
- Sarah: Sorry!
- Teri: I gotta cover it up, cover it up, cover it up! [Arm falls off due to excess coloring] Ah!
- [Cut to Carmen trying to put on some pants, but cannot due to her spines. Pants are ripped off in the process, with previous attempts being visible on the right]
- [Cut to Penny building a make-shift shell out of paper mache]
- [Cut to a clothed Tina, struggling to walk. She finally falls, blowing away Carrie's disguise. Carrie leaves after.]
- Gumball: It's like a runway show with literal fashion victims.
- Ocho: Hey guys, what do you think is the most appropiate way of wearing pants for me. [A drawing of Ocho in two different ways of wearing pants is shown, drawn by him. Both Gumball and Darwin are speechless.]
- Ocho: I do not know what to do anymore, I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! [He goes away crying, while destroying the floor with a laser beam]
- Penny: Ugh, agh, I can't see in this thing. [Penny falls off into the hole created by Ocho]
Finding a way to stop this madness
- [Cut to the backyard]
- Darwin: I think his pants are awesome, but clothes on top of his clothes is so meta, is breaking the Elmore universe, which we gotta avoid.
- [Cut Banana Joe stretching in a nearby bench]
- Banana Joe: Oh yeah. Oh that's a good one. Oh yeah, that burns deep. Oh that's good. [Stretching too hard] Oooh yeah.
- [Cut back to Gumball and Darwin, shown disgusted, then to everyone else as well.]
- Gumball: Wait up. I might have an idea on how to communicate that to him.
Something's off
- [Cut to the school hallway, where Banana Joe is exiting a restroom. Joe is surprised for what he's seeing right now. Jared is seen naked and using a peeled Idaho to cover his rear end.]]
- Jared: Hey dude, what's "cracking?" [laughs]
- [ Joe narrows his face in suspicion, before walking down the hallway and discovering a naked Hot Dog Guy leaning over an open locker.]
- Banana Joe: Something's going on, but what?
