"The Gumball Chronicles: The Curse of Elmore" is the first episode of The Gumball Chronicles[1][2]. In the United States, it was released on video-on-demand on October 2, 2020 and aired on October 5, 2020.
Synopsis[]
When Gumball's schoolfriend Leslie finds an old videotape, the creepy mystery of Elmore's ghostly past unfolds. Featuring spooky and hilarious clips from the first six seasons of "The Amazing World of Gumball."
Plot[]
SPOILER AHEAD! Important details about the plot or story are up ahead |
The episode starts with a scene from "The Ghouls": At the park, Alan and Leslie discover a VHS tape with a note attached to it. Leslie mistakenly uses it as a yo-yo, when another ghoul pops up from a well and snatches the VHS tape away. At the art room, the ghoul inserts the VHS into the VHS player but has to rewind it first, and Leslie is bored.
Once the ghoul inserts the VHS into the VHS player, many clips featuring the Watterson family from all seasons are shown, where they are experiencing scary situations. However, something is seen to be lurking in all of the scenes, which will be explained later. As many clips are being shown, the ghoul reminds the audience, Leslie, and Alan to look closely— during the parking lot scene in "The Petals", the VHS player pauses and Alan realizes that the clown has been lurking behind every single scene hidden in view. The ghoul later scares off Leslie and Alan as he reveals himself to be the clown in reality, but, once Leslie and Alan depart the scene, the clown turned out to be Tobias wearing a mask.
After that, the scene switches over to the Watterson children's room, with a background taken from "The Internet," where Gumball and Darwin get scared after the video that Tobias supposedly ended actually ends with a jumpscare.

Trivia[]
- This episode happens during "The Ghouls," in a scene that was not shown completely.
- This is the first episode in which Duke Cutler voices Gumball, replacing Nicolas Cantu.
- This was also the first time that the change between voice actors did not occur on screen, with no explanation being given for Gumball's new voice.
- This is the first episode of a mini-series in not having a chat conversation.
- Leslie leans on the fourth wall by acknowledging that the episode (and the larger mini-series) is a clip show, although in-universe, he is referring to the tape he and Alan are about to watch.
Continuity[]
- This episode marks Alan's eighth major role, the other seven were: "The Storm," "The Saint," "The Traitor," "The Vision," "The Faith," and "Darwin's Yearbook: Alan."
- This is also Leslie's fifth major role, the others were in "The Flower," "The Triangle," "The Petals," and "The Awareness."
Goofs/errors[]
- The clown in the majority of the clips is white-eyed, while in previous episodes, his eyes are seen to be black.

It's a clip show, isn't it?[]
- [The episode starts with a scene of "The Ghouls," showing Leslie and Alan at the park, walking along a pathway. They stop as they spot a videotape on the ground]
- Leslie: Hmm? [Picks it up and reads it] "If you play this it could be the last thing you ever play."
- Alan: [Gasps] That's terrible! Littering in our beautiful parks! The nerve of some people. What is it anyway?
- Leslie: No idea. It looks like someone tried to make a book out of plastic and ribbon.
- Alan: Maybe it's a yo-yo, from before they discovered gravity! Give it a go!
- [Leslie pulls out the ribbon of the videotape and repeatedly moves his hand up and down, causing it to constantly hit the ground]
- Alan: See?
- [Suddenly, from a nearby well, a lady with extremely long hair that covers her face crawls out and rushes towards the two]
- Samara: No. No. No, no, no, don't! You're ruining it! [Snatches it from Leslie] It's a cursed videotape! You watch it on a VHS player!
- Leslie: A what?
- [Cut to the art room in Elmore Junior High. Samara puts the videotape into a VHS player with a television above it]
- Samara: And that's how a VHS works. Of course, the problem with this cursed tape is, you know, people don't get the chance to rewind it.
- [She presses a button on the VHS player and the tape starts rewinding. As the television is filled with static making a whirring noise, the three wait in silence. A long pause. Leslie and Alan look at each other then back to the screen. They continue to wait]
- Leslie: [Checks his watch] Yeah, anyway I got a life to live. Is there any way we can stream it?
- Samara: Patience! What you're about to watch will blow your mind. Look carefully and maybe you can spot the curse of Elmore.
- Leslie: Yeah, whatever. This is just going to be a clip show, isn't it?
- Samara: No, more than just a clip show. It reveals a dark mystery about this town.
- Leslie: Mm-hmm.
- [The tape stops rewind. The hairy lady click on the "play" button]
Crazy things happen in Elmore[]
- Hairy lady: At first, you may think this is just a collection of the crazy things that happen here every Halloween, you know, like the pranks. Who doesn't love a good prank, right?
- [The tape is starting. We see a scene from "Halloween", showing Banana Joe and Idaho are dressed up for Halloween and ring the doorbell of the Wattersons]
- Richard: Ding dong!
- Banana Joe and Idaho: Trick or treat!
- [The doorbell is actually part of Richard's disguise, as he is camouflaged to blend in with the front of the house]
- Richard: [He opens his eyes, startling the two] Trick!
- [Banana Joe and Idaho run away in fear as Richard bursts into laughter, leaving their treats behind]
- Richard: What the? [Sadly] No! It's all raisins and granola bars!
- Samara: [Voice] And the dead coming back to life.
- [Now, the tape is showing a scene from "The Question," where Gumball and Darwin are running to the cemetery]
- Gumball: [Pants] I think we're safe now.
- [A zombie's hand emerges from a nearby grave. Gumball screams]
- Darwin: [Holds hand] Oh hi. So, since you've been there and done it, maybe you could help us out with the question: what's the meaning of life?
- Zombie: You have to live life to the fullest, dude. Look at me, I've done it all. I've jumped out of a plane, I've jumped out of a plane, I've jumped out of a-
- Gumball: Is that all you did?
- Zombie: Well, yeah. I was eighteen, so… yeah.
- Darwin: And how was it? You know, your life?
- Zombie: Aw man. It was really good for seventy seconds, and then really, really, really, really, really bad for a couple of seconds.
- Gumball: How is that living life to the fullest?
- Zombie: Think about it: would you rather live life to the fullest for seventy seconds? Or live a boring life for seventy years?
- Gumball and Darwin: Seventy years.
- Gumball: Straight up.
- [They leave]
- Zombie: No no no no no no! Don't go, it's boring here! Come back! [Parachute deploys] Darn. Aw, now you work.
- Samara: [Voice] And even the leaving becoming to dead.
- [A scene from "Halloween" is playing. Gumball and Darwin fly out through the window and go to a gas station where Larry is asleep at the counter. They draw on his face until the donut cop comes in]
- Donut Cop: Hello Larry.
- Larry: [Larry wakes up] What can I do for you? [He turns to the donut cop, his face now matching the mugshot on a wanted poster behind him]
- Donut Cop: [Holds up a taser] You can put your hands in the air!
- [Gumball and Darwin go to the Robinsons' house and posses a moose head mounted to the wall]
- Stuffed moose head: Hey, Margaret.
- [It puckers its lips up and Mrs. Robinson drops the tray she was carrying, breaking the teacups. Mr. Robinson appears]
- Gaylord: What is going on?
- Stuffed moose head: Nothing.
- [Mr. Robinson faints and Gumball and Darwin leave]
The Wattersons are cursed[]
- Samara: [Voice] Now are you thinking what I'm thinking?
- Leslie: That this video is just a cheap clip show after all?
- Samara: [Sighs] No! You're thinking "Maybe this is all about the Watterson family".
- [We see a scene from "The Microwave," where Nicole is in the backyard]
- Nicole: Richard? Richard, you better not be trying to scare me.
- [Nicole steps on a rubber duck, and is startled by it]
- Nicole: [Sighs in relief] Richard? Richard, stop playing games.
- [Kenneth sneaks from behind, and towers over Nicole]
- Nicole: Richard?
- [Nicole looks up, and screams. Back inside]
- Gumball and Darwin: Mo-o-o-o-o-m!
- [Cuts to the both of them creeping around out in the backyard, carrying tools for weapons. An owl hoots]
- Gumball: What was that?
- Darwin: It's an owl.
- Gumball: Oh.
- [They continue walking. A twig cracks]
- Gumball: What was that?
- Darwin: A twig.
- Gumball: Oh.
- [They continue walking again. The sound of flapping is heard]
- Darwin: What was that?
- Gumball: That's my butt cheek quivering with fear.
- [Gumball's butt is seen quivering]
- Samara: [Voice] So many other clips—I mean, examples of paranormal activity appeared to be focused around the Wattersons.
- [The tape switch to a scene from "The Poltergeist." Richard is seen sleeping. Then he wakes up to the sound of thunder and gets scared]
- Richard: [Waking up] Is that you, tooth fairy?
- [Richard hears a moan and then screams]
- Richard: Aaaaaah! It's a ghost! It's a ghost! It's a gho—
- [Nicole wakes up and sighs; she turns on a music box and Richard falls asleep, calmed by the stars that come from the music box]
- Samara: [Voice] So maybe the Watterson family are cursed!
- Leslie: [Voice] Uh-huh, cursed with stupidity!
- [A scene from "The Vacation" is shown. The Wattersons are running away from the scary old man]
- Scary Old Man: [Shouting] Come back here!
- [Richard loses fat from running, he becomes remotely unrecognizable]
- Richard: We can't run forever! I'm out of calories!
- [He eats marshmallows and becomes fat again]
- Richard: And I'm almost out of marshmallows!
- Anais: Look! A head in the road!
- [Everyone screams]
- Anais: No! I mean ahead in the road. A car!
- [They signal for the driver]
- Unseen Driver: You guys need a ride?
- [The camera shows a fridge in the truck compartment, it opens creakily and is empty]
- Richard: Ahh! The fridge is empty!
- [Everyone runs away screaming]
- Scary Old Man: Come back!
- Richard: Kids! Kids, where are you?!
- [He falls off a cliff and gets stuck between the mountain rocks, then falls down into a mud puddle]
- Nicole: Guys. Guys! Where are you?! Guys?
- Richard: I'm here!
- [Richard comes out of the mud and Nicole kicks him several times, then runs away screaming. The scene changes to Gumball]
- Scary Old Man: Yello! Time for dinner! I'm ready for ya!
- [Camera spins around Gumball]
- Gumball: Aah! Leave us alone!
- [Gumball walks dizzy]
- Gumball: I have been looking around too fast.
- [Gumball and Darwin walk into each other, getting black eyes]
- Samara: [Voice] Everything they do appeared to be touched by—
- Leslie: Idiotic decision-making?
- Samara: No! Touched by dark forces!
- [We see a scene from "The Deal," where Nicole open a cabinet. Anais, in her Gremlin-like form, causes Nicole to scream in horror and assails her by throwing a toaster at her; she runs away]
- Nicole: Hey! Get back here.
- [The toaster then vacuums Nicole's face, making her struggle to get it out. When she manages to do so, her mouth is formed as a toaster]
- Nicole: I said come back here!
- [She shakes her head, restoring its original form; as she is about to climb up the stairs, Gumball, in his Gremlin-like form, holds and shakes a grandfather clock, blocking the stairway. He pushes and rides the clock down the stairway; Nicole avoids by jumping over it, as it crashes through the door. She catches Gumball]
- Nicole: [Not recognizing Gumball] What are you doing in my house?!
- Gumball: Koo-koo!
- [An automated cuckoo bird pops out of Gumball's mouth, making Nicole react with surprise]
- Nicole: [Surprised] Ahh!
- [Gumball giggles and escapes off-screen; Nicole goes to her bedroom and finds a gathering of ghosts, all creating a commotion]
- Nicole: [Infuriated] What are you doing in here?!
- [Once she catches all the ghosts' attention, they immediately disappear, including Carrie, who was about to kiss Darwin, in his Gremlin-like form, while wearing Nicole's wedding dress]
- Nicole: Is that my wedding dress?!
- [Darwin runs away]
- Nicole: [Turning around, facing the children who are behind her] Get out of my house!
- Gumball, Darwin, Anais: [Mocking Nicole] Get out of my house! [Cackle]
- Nicole: I said get out or I'll call the cops!
- [Gumball vomits a piece of the donut cop]
- Anais: [Wearing the donut cop's hat] Send more cops!
- Gumball, Darwin, and Anais: Cops, yum yum!
- Samara: [Voice] But now, the curse touches everyone in Elmore.
- [A clip of "The Sale" is now playing. Susan is going up the stairway into a dark hallway in the Robinsons' house. She is about to turn the light on. Then she looks at the other section and sees a strange figure (Darwin.) She gasps. Susan turns the light on, the figure then disappears. She repeats this a couple of times until she heads forward, scared. ]
- Gaylord: Would you like to check out the bathroom? [Opens the door]
- [Darwin is seen in the bathroom, floating, with big hair]
- Susan: Maybe later...
- [Mr. Robinson closes the door, Darwin then screams and gets knocked out of the window. The video is paused]
- Leslie: [Voice] No, it's just Darwin playing a silly prank.
- Samara: [Voice] No! Look closer!
Can you see it?[]
- [The tape is now on a clip from "The End", showing Anton singing happily and eating a sandwich. He looks at all the birds around him]
- Samara: [Voice] Look. Do you see the ghoul? Can you spy the ghost?
- Leslie: [Voice] No, but I can see the school, and I spy the toast.
- [The video is paused]
- Samara: [Voice] Listen, are you going to take this seriously or not?
- Leslie: [Voice] Okay, play on.
- [Samara replays the video, at the same scene. Anton throw his sandwich to the birds]
- Anton: Here. You can have it. Please let me go! [All the birds fly to Anton and he screams]
- Samara: [Voice] Remember when you all turned into joy zombies?
- [We see a scene from "The Joy", where Miss Simian try to close the door of her office as Principal Brown, Gumball, Darwin and Mrs. Markham try to get in]
- Lucy Simian: No!
- Samara: [Voice] Watch carefully.
- [Miss Simian slaps their hands away and closes the door. They break the door window, reaching in. She screams and backs away toward her desk. She looks at the CCTV footage]
- Lucy Simian: Oh no! [Screams]
- [On a surveillance camera, in the cafeteria, Gumball and Darwin enter and infect Alan and Bobert while Carmen and Tobias run away. Elsewhere, Rocky sprays something under his arm. Mrs. Markham jumps onto him, knocking him down. He screams]
- Rocky: [Looks at the spray] Oh, it really works! [Becomes infected and laughs]
- [In the hallway, Bobert shorts out the electrical power, darkening the school. On another surveillance camera, in the hallway, Alan infects the Eggheads, Juke, and Carmen. Touching her pops him, splattering rainbow fluid on the camera. Elsewhere in the hallway, Idaho runs away from Teri, Jamie, and Masami, who are infected and coming closer. Tobias steps forth]
- Tobias: Ladies!
- Leslie: [Voice] Wait, pause it!
- [The video is paused]
- Samara: [Voice] Finally, you see.
- Leslie: [Voice] Yes. So handsome.
- Samara: [Voice] Yeah, I agree. Tobias is a good-looking guy.
- Leslie: [Voice] No, me!
- Samara: [Voice] But even he is not safe from the curse.
- [The tape show a scene from "The Ghouls", where Tobias and Banana Joe walk away from the Fitzgerald's house]
- Tobias: Dude, you know how we can get more candy without trick or treating?
- Banana Joe: We plant some, and harvest it next fall!
- Tobias: No, there's an urban legend that you can summon Mr. Candy. All you gotta do is say his name three times.
- Banana Joe: Sweet! I'm in.
- [They get ready to summon Mr. Candy.]
- Tobias and Banana Joe: Candy, Candy, Candy!
- [A flash of light and a loud thunder like sound is heard to their right. Mr. Candy is seen standing there with a pose surrounded by bees]
- Mr. Candy: They will taste my sweet revenge! [Turns around] Huh?
- Tobias and Banana Joe: [Hold up their baskets] Eh?
- Mr. Candy: What?
- Tobias and Banana Joe: We want candy!
- Mr. Candy: Well I don't have any.
- Tobias: But you're supposed to bring us candy!
- Mr. Candy: No, if you summon me, I'm supposed to exact a terrible revenge upon you for my unjust end! [Swings his hooked hand and lightning strikes]
- Tobias: And then give us candy?
- Mr. Candy: No! And if you don't mind, I was in the middle of something! [With a swing of his hook, he materializes away]
- Tobias and Banana Joe: [Looks at each other] Candy, Candy, Candy!
- Mr. Candy: [He appears with a flash with the same pose as before. He glares at them] What?!
- Tobias: Yeah, do you know anyone who does give out candy?
- Mr. Candy: No! [Materializes away again]
- Tobias and Banana Joe: Candy, Candy, Candy!
- Mr. Candy: [Appears with a flash once more] Oh for—ugh... [Takes something small out of his coat with his hook] I got half a breath mint. Take that and leave me alone.
- Tobias: [Sighs and they both walk away] You really don't live up to your name man.
- Banana Joe: [Runs back, takes the breath mint and eats it] Hmm, fresh! [Walks off]
- [Mr. Candy screams in frustration and materializes away once again]
- Samara: [Voice] And even you, Leslie, have been stalked by the horror.
- [A scene from "The Petals" is playing, where, inside the parking lot, Leslie is running around. The scene cuts to Harold, who is having trouble starting up his car]
- Harold: Come on, you stupid—
- [He spots Leslie, and both screams]
- Leslie: [Muffled] It won't start unless it's in park.
- Harold: Hmm? [Rolls down the window]
- Leslie: It won't start unless it's in park.
- Harold: Oh, thanks.
- [He starts the car, punches Leslie and screams. He bumps into a wall and drive off]
- Leslie: I'm not a monster! I just look like one!
- [The video is paused.]
The clown is everywhere[]
- Samara: [Voice] Surely you can see it.
- Leslie: [Voice] I can see I need a facial.
- Alan: [Voice] Wait. I can see him. He was behind the pillar, right?
- Samara: [Voice] Yes, Alan, and your family has been affected by him more than any.
- [The tape show a scene from "The Saint", where the clown is making balloon tricks with the Alan's mother]
- Jessica: Please, I have a son!
- Leslie: [Voice] Oh, the clown guy.
- Samara: [Voice] Yes, the clown guy.
- [We see a scene from "The Procrastinators", where Gumball and Darwin are getting ready to reveal their drawings]
- Gumball and Darwin: Three, two, one!
- [They both reveal their drawings. Gumball's drawing is a detailed sketch of Darwin. Darwin's drawing resembles a child's. There is a creepy looking clown in his drawing, and Gumball notices this]
- Samara: [Voice] He is always watching.
- Gumball: Why would you add a scary clown through the window inside of a— [Sees that there is actually a clown at the window and closes his eyes, frightened]
- [We see the head of the clown close-up]
- Samara: [Voice] For every scary thing in Elmore, he is there...
- [We see a short part of some videos that we seen before, revealing that the clown was hiding in every video]
- Samara: [Voice] ...hiding in plain sight. Lurking... Waiting... Watching... It was always the clown. The clown... is... everywhere...
- [The film of the tape is finished. Leslie and Alan seems bored]
That was "Extreme Pranking" with Tobias Wilson[]
- Samara: Huh?
- Leslie: Yeah, I mean, neat editing, but I saw that twistcoming about ten minutes ago. Sorry.
- Samara: Oh. I feel silly now. I guess there's only one more thing to say.
- Leslie: Go on.
- [Samara pulls her hair back, revealing her face, which is actually that of the clown]
- Samara: [Clown voice] Happy Halloween!
- [Alan bursts out in fear. Leslie run away, screaming. Samara laughs then takes off her mask, revealing that she was actually Tobias from the beginning]
- Tobias: Classic double twist! That was "Extreme Pranking" with Tobias Wilson!
- [We see that all the episode was an Elmore Stream-It video called "The Curse of Elmore" posted by Tobias. Gumball and Darwin was on their desk watching the video]
- Gumball: Well, that was unnecessarily elaborate. Kind of just a clip show. Sorry Tobias, takes more than that to scare us.
- [The video is still playing, but nothing is happening. We just see the place where Tobias pranked Leslie and Alan]
- Gumball: Oh, wait. It's still playing, is it? Is it? [Approach the screen] Tobias must have forgotten to turn the camera off when he finish—
- [Tobias jump and screams at the camera. Gumball and Darwin screams of fear, ending the episode]
