The Amazing World of Gumball Vol. 1: Fairy Tale Trouble is the first original graphic novel of The Amazing World of Gumball comics. It was released on November 25th, 2015.[1]

Synopsis

The Wattersons visit a Renaissance fair and Gumball accidentally angers a magician who then turns Elmore into an actual fairytale world.[2]

The story begins with a tale of two heroic knights, Gumball and Darwin, venturing the land. This is quickly revealed to be a dream however, as Gumball is woken up by Nicole blaring the cars horn. The family are all excited as they have arrived at the 'Reallye Olde Timey Renaissance Faire'. Nicole takes Richard to get some turkey legs, leaving the kids to run around and explore the fair on their own,

Gumball is excited to joust, but is disappointed when Nicole returns and explains that he won't be allowed to do so. Upset and annoyed he instead agrees to go and watch a magic show with Darwin and Anais. During the show the magician asks for some volunteers, and picks Gumball and Darwin. The two are left mind-blown and in awe when the magician then proceeds to correctly guess which card they picked. This awe quickly turns to anger however as Gumball realises that magic isn't real, and thus the magician tricked and lied to him and Darwin.

Anais suggests that they could work out how the trick was performed and expose the magician as a fraud if they watched it again. Gumball agrees, and after watching the trick performed again works out the trick behind it. Determined for revenge he then storms onto the stage and exposes the secret to the audience. Furious, the magician begins to shoot smoke out of his hands and casts a spell, revealing that he can perform real magic. The smoke completely shrouds the terrified kids and audience.

As the smoke clears the kids are confused as they find themselves stood in the middle of a forest. As a narrator explains that Gumball has messed up, Anais hears voices further down the path. The three go to investigate and find the magician stood in front of their father, who lays unconscious on a large stone pedestal. The magician explains that he got carried away, before handing Gumball, Darwin and Anais three cards. In order to wake up their father the three must venture out on a quest to obtain three items; a mug, a bag of coffee beans and a coffee machine.

Setting out for the first item. the three siblings enter what the narrator explains is "a deep, dark forest, home of many terrors". After being chased by bats the three freeze in fear as they hear loud stomps heading toward them. A cloaked figure emerges from the shadows, quickly revealing herself to be their mother in a princess dress and wings, She explains that she was given a role card and is their fairy godmother, before handing them all their own role cards. Anais transforms into a knight, with Daisy as her horse, and Darwin becomes a wizard. Gumball's transformation takes a little longer however, leading him to become excited and speculate as to what he might become. Finally, he transforms, and to his utter disappointment and embarrarassment he finds out that he is a jester.

His mother and siblings attempt to comfort him, before the former suggests that the three of them head toward the large spooky castle that used to be the school. She, meanwhile, heads off to protect their father until they get back. Armed with their new roles and ready to begin their adventure the three set off. As they head toward the castle Gumball remains upset at his role, only getting more jealous as Anais front flips onto her horse and Darwin creates bubbles with his staff. Darwin and Anais, after a little playful teasing, assure him that his role really doesn't matter that much, and they're all in this together.

As they continue toward the castle a coffee bean suddenly hits the tree next to Gumball, narrowly missing him. He, Darwin and Anais turn to see where it came from and find Tobias in a brown cloak, holding a slingshot. Anais quickly notices that he has the bag of coffee beans that they're looking for, but he stubbornly refuses to hand them over. Gumball tries and fails to convince him, so Anais challenges him to a duel, with the winner getting to keep the beans. He accepts, only for Anais to swiftly disarm and defeat him with her sword. Accepting defeat, he reluctantly hands over the coffee beans.

As the siblings leave him behind and continue their journey, the three are terrified when Banana Joe, now a wolfman, appears out of nowhere and scares them. He is furious with Gumball, jealous that he gets to be the jester whilst he is stuck as a wolfman. As Joe's rage begins to spiral out of control the trio make a break for it and run away, not stopping until the narration confirms for them that they'd managed to escape him.

After catching their breathe for a moment the three continue onward again, and stumble upon a rainbow. Deciding to follow it, the three find a large open field with various fairy tale creatures and, sat amongst them at a large table, Penny and Carrie as princesses. As Anais and Darwin show off to and impress the two of then, Gumball stands and watches with envy at the table. He gasps in delight, however, as he notices the mug the group are searching for sat on the table. He excitedly announces his find to the others, only to drop the mug when he swipes at a bird pecking on his hat. When he fails to catch it Darwin saves the day by shooting out a stream of bubbles out of his staff, which safely catch the mug.

As everyone praises Darwin for saving the mug and gives him all of the credit, Gumball finally snaps and goes on a rant to Penny about how stupid and and uncool he is and how she must be embarrassed to be around him. She scolds him for assuming such a thing, before reassuring him that nobody cares about his role or outfit except him, and that he needs to stop being so worked up over it. He can be a hero regardless of what role or abilities he has. Darwin and Anais agree and remind him that he isn't in this alone, and that he has the two of them to help him,

Feeling guilty and realizing how terribly he'd been acting Gumball apologises to his siblings for how unappreciative he'd been acting, and admits that he's proud of their accomplishments and found everything they did super cool. The two accept his apology, and the siblings finally reconcile with a hug. Finally content with his role in their adventure, Gumball offers for Penny and Carrie to join them. They decline, wishing to explore e a nearby pirate ship instead, and wish the three luck before bidding farewell.

Not wanting to wait any longer the trio making their own leave, continuing their journey toward the castle. They climb up mountains, perilously hop across lakes, and walk down long foggy paths until finally they arrive at their destination. After Anais and Darwin work together to lower the drawbridge, the group are suddenly attacked by bursts of flames coming from within the castle. As the ground rumbles, the group believes a dragon is emerging, but is actually Tina with horns and wings. Realizing that she's in pain from breathing fire, Darwin uses his staff to create a giant peppermint candy, which Tina eats. Her fiery breathe now extinguished, Tina gratefully lets the three pass into the castle.

As the trio explore inside the castle they soon find statues of Miss Simian, realizing that she is the evil queen. They hear music coming from further inside the castle, and upon investigating find Rocky playing a lute. He explains that Miss Simian kicked him out of the thrown room, and reveals that she is in possession of the coffee maker they need to complete their quest. The three enter her throne room and attempt to convince her to give them the coffee maker so things can return to normal, but she refuses as her life is much better now. Suddenly, Banana Joe bursts into the room, having finally caught up to Gumball. He challenges Gumball to a duel to see who is funnier, which the narration forces him to accept.

Joe juggles some balls, and dares Gumball to do something better, only to be frustrated when Gumball has no idea what to do. Miss Simian, bored of the entertainment, has Joe, Anais and Darwin dragged out. Gumball however, evades her guards, and is left to defeat Miss Simian on his own. Continuing to evade capture, he swings on a rope and crashes into the narration's text, which falls and crushes Miss Simian's throne. Furious, she tries to catch Gumball herself, only to slip on a banana peel in front of everyone. As everyone else is distracted laughing at her Gumball sneaks past and grabs the coffee maker, completing the quest and saving the day. Everyone is teleported back to Richard, and after Gumball, Darwin and Anais brew him a cup of coffee with the items they'd collected, he wakes up and Elmore returns to normal.

Relieved the ordeal is over, Nicole and Richard go to watch the joust. Meanwhile Banana Joe comes up to Gumball and apologises, in awe at Gumball's comedic genius, before vowing to train and leaving a confused Gumball behind. As Gumball, Darwin and Anais look around, pleased that everyone else is okay and happy, they decide they've had enough of ye olden times and decide to go to the arcade and play some video games together instead. As the three happily leave the fair, the narrator experiments with a few different final lines, before settling with a classic...

The Rumbledome

On a hot summer day Richard wakes up in the middle of the street in his underwear. He is confused as he finds the town deserted, and the school wrecked and rebranded as 'Elmoreland.' Bobert, acting as the doorman, scans Richard and finds that he is wanted. He is immediately captured by Jamie, Tina and Anton and taken inside.

Suddenly, Gumball and Darwin, armed with dart guns, drop from the ceiling along with Anais, Rescuing their father from his captors, they escort him to safety, hiding inside a bathroom. There they finally explain to him that a harmless school exercise, playfully fighting each other with dart guns, turned into full on war. In order to limit the destruction of the town they created the Rumbledome, a caged arena for battles to be fought in.

Darwin explains to Richard that Nicole went looking for him three days ago and hasn't been seen since but, now that he's here, he could be the key to finally ending this war once and for all, and so he must remain hidden in the bathroom to avoid being captured and taken to the Rumbledome.

Later that night, once Gumball, Darwin and Richard are asleep, Anais sneaks out of the bathroom through the window and meets up with Jamie, Tina and Anton. They compliment her on her performance, revealing she is secretly a double agent working against her brothers. They agree upon a plan, where Anais is to trick Richard, Gumball and Darwin into walking into an ambush at the vending machine.

The next day Gumball, Darwin and Richard make their way to the vending machine, scouting for food. They are horrified however as Anais and her group appear behind them, revealing the ambush and Anais' betrayal. Gumball and Darwin attempt to fight their way out of the ambush, but fail and are captured along with their father and taken to the Rumbledome. There, the leader of the dome is revealed...Mr Small. He asks Richard to tell Gumball to stop being a sore loser so the game can end. He then explains that he had the idea for the game as a fun way for the students to work out their feelings. Gumball, however, refused to go out after being hit.

Gumball insists that it wasn't fair as his gun had a faulty trigger spring, and thus he had to keep fighting. He's fought and taken out everyone except Mr Small, which he intends to finish off now. Mr Small explains that Tina already got him out two days ago, and that the last remaining adult is actually Richard.

The two fight, Richard evading shots until he trips over. Cornered and with no way out, Gumball aims the gun at him, determined to finish him off. Mr Small tries to save him, but his gun is sabotaged and thus his dart fails to reach Gumball. Gumball goes to fire the game ending shot on his father, only to be shot multiple times in the back. He collapses, revealing Nicole who arrived just in time to save Richard.

Suddenly, everything returns to normal again and the residents of Elmore emerge, surprised that Nicole and more importantly Richard, of all people saved the day. As they begin to cheer and praise him, Anais laments that even her father's dreams are pathetic, as it revealed the entire story was actually just the dream of the unconscious Richard during his magician induced slumber.

  • It is possible that this story is a prequel to the Comic-Con special mini-comic "The Tasks", depicting the earlier Renaissance Fair that Gumball and Darwin are revealed to have messed up in that story. This is unconfirmed however.
