Studio Soi GmbH & Co. KG Filmproduktion, stylized studio soi, is a German independent animation studio that produces animated television shows, films, and shorts. Based in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the studio was founded in 2003 by animation directors Carsten Bunte, Torben Meier, Klaus Morschheuser, Mathias Schreck and Michael Sieber.
From 2008 to 2018 (10 years), Studio Soi worked with Cartoon Network Studios Europe (now Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe) in producing The Amazing World of Gumball. It also helped produce the early reel of the series.
History[]
In 2003, Studio Soi was founded by seven animation directors, including Carsten Bunte, Torben Meier, Klaus Morschheuser, Mathias Schreck and Michael Sieber, and set in Ludwigsburg, Germany, next to the Animation Institute for the Filmakademie Baden-Württemburg, which most of the founders attended prior. The studio has since produced several shorts, idents, films, and television series in working with clients such as the BBC, Netflix, Cartoon Network, and Bouygues Telecom.
The Amazing World of Gumball[]
Studio Soi initially encountered with Ben Bocquelet in 2004, when he and another director now at Studio Soi, Johannes Weiland, started as juniors at Studio AKA. Since 2007, when Bocquelet joined Cartoon Network Studios Europe, Studio Soi was involved with the realization of his characters, most of which were based on rejections from Studio AKA.
In 2008, Studio Soi began being involved in the preproduction for Gumball, notably incorporating mixed media in the series' initial pitch to Cartoon Network. During the first season, the studio "set up the technical pipeline and the CGI elements," and in the second season, the studio extended its role to 2D inbetweening, rendering, and compositing, as well.
Studio Soi's animation team that worked on Gumball was mainly led by Torben Meier, with Michael Sieber as the animation supervisor, and with Mathias Schreck working on production pipelines. Gumball animators include Juan Pedro Arroyo Molina, Eva Figueroa, Benjamin Rosentreter, Klaus Morschheuser, and Guillaume Glachant.
The studio has received several awards and international praise from The Amazing World of Gumball, including awards from the British Academy Television of Film and Television Arts and those from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
