Gumball and Jamie are in the school corridor arguing. Darwin tries to defuse the argument, but fails when Jamie dares Gumball to start a game of tag to settle it. Both Banana Joe and Darwin try to stop him from doing so, and even Jamie begins to try and backtrack on her dare as she realizes Gumball is serious about going through with it. Gumball refuses to back down however, and flips a coin to decide who is it. It lands on heads, making him it, and immediately everyone in the corridor runs away from him.
Later on Gumball goes to get on the bus home, but Rocky slams the doors shut and drives off a cliff to escape him, leaving him to walk home. Now upset, Gumball arrives to an empty house, finding that everyone is hiding from him. Anais calls out for him discreetly, as she stands at the top of the stairs, hiding under a blanket. Refusing to let him get near in fear of being seen talking to him, she explains how seriously everyone takes the game, describing it as a war. Attempting to trick her into shaking his hand he thanks her and offers a handshake. She doesn't fall for it however and tells him to find someone else to tag. Meanwhile Richard is spreading word of Gumball being it through the emergency tag broadcast system.
As Gumball now sits on the stairs upset, he has an idea. He asks his Mom for a hug. Heartwarmed by the gesture, she goes to hug him, but stops when she sees Anais holding up a sign outside the window warning her that Gumball is it. Walking away she insists she'll be coming back for the hug later on. He also tries to hug his father, but is kicked out of the house until he is no longer it. Darwin tries to convince him to share the burden and allow Gumball to tag him, but Richard refuses and kicks him out too.
Feeling bad for him, Darwin offers to let Gumball tag him as long as he agrees to listen to his advice next time. Gumball agrees and tags Darwin, before immediately running away. Darwin insists that Gumball let him tag him back later on, but he refuses and leaves Darwin on his own.
Later that night Gumball has a nightmare about Darwin vigourously training to get his revenge. Waking up with a scream, he begins to feel extremely guilty. The next day he repeatedly apologises to Darwin who refuses to speak to him. He apologises gradually louder and louder until Miss Simian, annoyed, calls him to the front of the class and tells him to share what he was saying to the entire class. Gumball explains that he loves Darwin so much he can't go a second with getting another hug from him. After checking he's sure Darwin hugs him, tagging him back.
Miss Simian is touched by the gesture, only to be literally touched by Gumball, tagging her and making her it. Furious, she sends him and Darwin flying through the window.
